SDG16: Peace, justice and strong institutions
Five hundred people die from gun violence every day, around the world. In recent years the number of firearms related deaths has increased significantly. The majority of gun related deaths occur in non-conflict zones; although the wide availability of firearms makes it more likely that conflict will erupt. In addition to the terrible loss of life, life-long injury, and psychological effects of this violence, it also poses an existential risk to the strength of public institutions. Gun violence feeds corruption; organized crime networks utilize gun violence to take control of wide swaths of territory. Through threats and bribery they recruit police and legal authorities; resulting in a lack of justice for communities affected by gun violence and a lack of faith in public institutions.
