SDG12: Responsible consumption and production
Every year 8 million small arms and 15 billion rounds of ammunition are produced. Whether in civilian or state possession, this often results in surpluses in stockpiles of weapons. Our resources should be placed to far more sustainable and environmentally conscious investments. The arms industry is closely tied with the fossil fuel industry. For example, the US military produces more CO2 emissions annually than some countries, including Portugal and Sweden.18 As consumers we all have an opportunity to use our pocketbooks as leverage to encourage companies to be environmentally and human rights conscious. Humanium Metal is a perfect example of this, the upcycling of old weapons to make a statement against gun violence. There are also strong examples of consumers leading demands for companies to divest from the arms industry, our consumption patterns matter.
