SDG6: Clean water and sanitation

Lack of access to clean water kills more people annually than armed violence. However, lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation is often facilitated by armed violence. Armed conflict damage facilities which provide clean water and create significant barriers to interventions to provide clean water and sanitation.  During armed conflict, water rigs can become a source of violence. Even outside of conflict zones, gun violence plagues access to water. Organized crime networks who rule through gun violence at times take control of water systems, disconnecting pipes and selling the water to citizens. The World Bank estimates that between 20-40% of water sector finances are lost to criminal and corrupt activities.
