Indigenous activists who campaign to protect the land they live on from deforestation, development, mining etc. are often targeted by armed groups. Killings of environmental defenders have doubled in the past fifteen years, with four defenders killed every week.  A disproportionate amount of these defenders are indigenous. Many defenders are killed with gun violence carried our by companies, organized crime networks and governments. In addition to the terrible loss of life, these murders have a chilling effect on advocacy to protect our natural resources, and the communities and animals reliant on them.
